Stuck on the Island by EELusive Games

Time Played: about 20 minutes

Overall Gameplay (7.5 / 13 points)

Comments: I love seeing a polished, complete product in a game jam! I thought there was a lot of things that this entry did right. Every part of it looks nice, the mechanics are all built out to completion, the controls are simple and easy to pick up (it's just a mouse). Unfortunately I felt like it was still missing some sort of "fun" factor. The minigames were just... fine. The minesweeper minigame was well built, but... it's just minesweeper. The eel game was okay, but... it's just mindless pointing and clicking. The knowledge minigame was alright, but... doing endless math equations feels more like grade-school homework than a video game. I can do those minigames once or twice, but doing them all over and over again with no variations or progression just to slowly climb towards victory? I'm sorry but I just can't. It was good that there was building and upgrading to give me something to do in between minigames - while that system had some depth, it didn't have anywhere near enough entertainment value. Building or upgrading something didn't give me anything new to do or to be excited for, just... more numbers.

Theme Inclusion (5 / 6 points)

Comments: This is an okay use of the theme - I wish it was more present in the core gameplay loop rather than being almost purely a plot point - but it's acceptable.

Overall Presentation (9 / 10 points)

Comments: I thought the overall visual quality of this game was good rather than great - but I was pleasantly surprised by the consistency of that quality throughout every single screen and minigame. Even the math minigame was incredibly satisfying to look at. Overall I liked the presentation, and you almost managed to fit all of the information needed to play the game within the game itself, with the exception being creating new buildings. I needed to have the README pulled up side-by-side which isn't the most engrossing experience. Everything sounded fantastic! Lots of details here to love, such as the unique sounds that each tile made when clicking on them.

Final comments: This is one of the rare cases of jam games where I thought the execution was excellent while the concept wasn't really up to par, rather than the reverse. It's clear a lot of time had been put into this entry, and it was nice seeing something so polished - but I'm sorry to say that I just didn't find it very fun.
