Hydrogen dance by Mr Magnus

Time Played: about 5 minutes

Overall Gameplay (6.5 / 13 points)

Comments: This was a short but complete experience. I was impressed with the perpetual complexity of the patterns of the other dots - they were both visually satisfying and mechanically challenging. I didn't love the way the "player character" handled - movement felt far too fast and sudden for a game that demanded such fine, precise handling. I think I would've appreciated it if the game was just scaled up in general so that the dots were all moderately larger and I didn't feel so pressured to manage my position so strictly. Deducting from the player's final score rather than having a certain "death" threshold was an interesting choice, and perhaps it was the right one, but it didn't give me anything substantial to play toward. It left me feeling pretty done with the game after the first playthrough.

Theme Inclusion (2 / 6 points)

Comments: I thought the theme connection here was pretty weak - if it wasn't for the title I'd have assumed that this game had completely ignored the theme.

Overall Presentation (6 / 10 points)

Comments: Presentation overall was simple, but it got the job done and it had a very consistent theme. Using the menu as an opportunity for the player to control their character in order to get the hang of the controls was a really nice touch. Omitting most of the game instructions seemed to be a deliberate design choice, but I'm not sure it was one that I agreed with - I had to "take damage" in order to figure out what was happening and what I was supposed to do. Speaking of, I also didn't understand until the end that there was no "death" - knowing that ahead of time probably would've changed the way I played. Graphics were extremely simplistic - while that was obviously the point, I also can't award many points in that category. Background music was nice and fit the game perfectly.

Final comments: This game was put together nicely and it's a complete package. I only wish that there was more to keep me engaged for longer.
